GS&P Academy Assignments

1. Choose a favorite family member or pet. Then design a logo and write a tagline (not a headline – a tagline. Examples: Think Different, Just Do it, Got Milk?) for them. Consider colors, typeface, and the person or pet’s personality.

Meet Wassily, the cat named after the famous abstract painter Wassily Kandinsky. When I found this stray cat, I was reading "Point and Line to Plane" by Kandinsky.

True to his name, Wassily is an artist too!

The ideation process

I decided to go with the concept that is more minimalistic & simple, referencing the abstract art of Wassily Kandinsky. So I ended up selecting the design with the cat's paw "trespassing"/ breaking through one dimension into another:

The tagline ideation.

I thought that the tagline should be something like: "Express yourself", but maybe a little bit more "punk" and mischievous. Wassily the cat would usually specifically target my favorite sweaters that were purposefully hidden away from him!

As for the colors, I wanted to select primary colors (also mainly inspired by Wassily Kandinsky's abstract art). Red and yellow seem to convey joyfulness and bravery, so I ended up picking them.

For the font I was looking into something that would remind me of a graffiti or a street art style - something that would have a connotation of "vandalism", when I stumbled upon The Post No Bills Font! I think it adds some spice to the concept.

2. Create a new fitness app specifically designed for people over 80. Describe how it would work. And include its name, logo, tagline (slogan), app store description, and at least one ad.

Zesty is a fitness app tailored for seniors aged 80 and above, allowing them to schedule in-person group or personal drum workout sessions. It operates on a monthly subscription basis, granting access to all drum workout classes in the area. Additionally, it provides complimentary shuttle transfers for members, resembling a school bus service, picking them up en route to their fitness classes. Drum workouts are lively, energetic, and rhythmically engaging full-body exercises meticulously crafted with seniors aged 80 and above in focus.

As the seniors are usually not very tech savvy, the app is very minimalistic and functions similar to a medical appointment system. It has only a few buttons: after you select one of the buttons you receive an automated phone call to schedule your next class/ to reschedule or cancel your existing class, and to schedule your shuttle pick up time, if needed.

You will also receive phone call notifications to remind you of your drum workout 'appointments.'

The subscription also includes access to a TV channel with pre-recorded drum workouts so that you can exercise at home at your own time.

The app ideation process.

1. Personal experience: My granny is 81. She enjoys spending time with her girlfriends. If she could do a fun workout with them that doesn't look like a workout but more like a fun activity - she'd enjoy fitness much more! Plus, she's not very tech savvy: if there are a lot of buttons, menu option, etc. - she gets confused. My cousin gave her a fitbit watch - she pressed on something and now she cannot use it anymore - it's too complicated for her!

2. Most fitness apps are designed for at-home workouts. However, for seniors 80+ it would be better to have some sort of supervision: seniors have a higher risk of injuries, falling, health conditions, physical limitations that require modifications. Plus, seniors would greatly benefit from participating in a fun group community-building experience!

Throughout the ideation process I came up with a lot of ideas, some of them were quite crazy: a workout wheelchair (like a peloton bike but a wheelchair), a smarthome workout set that will include a web camera, so that the seniors can be monitored during their workouts, a fitness app that looks exactly like YouTube (surprisingly, most seniors do know how to navigate YouTube!), and many more!

Eventually, I decided to select a very simple idea: drum workouts for seniors that are available at a number of locations with a shuttle bus that will bring the seniors to those locations (similar to a school bus).  The app itself will just help remind the users of their upcoming scheduled classes, and/or schedule new classes, plus schedule the shuttle pick up to go to the class.

And as seniors are not very tech savvy, the app will just have a very few buttons that will initiate a phone call to schedule/reschedule/cancel appointments or remind them of the upcoming appointments. (I have to say that I was very much inspired by the Snug app). The app will also provide the pickup location for the shuttle service.

Plus, the app will have a complimentary tv channel with pre-recorded beginner-friendly drum workouts, that the seniors can do at home if they wish to.

Zesty: logo & name ideation process

Honestly, the idea for the name came very easily because the shape of the fitness ball reminded me of a citrus fruit. Plus, the zest of life - this is exactly what I'd want my granny to experience during her workouts. When I'm 80+ plus I hope there's something fun like that on the market!

This is a story about two best friends, Martha and Lynda, spying on Martha's a cheating boyfriend and discovering the Zesty drum workouts by accident.
